I don't know why, most laboratories here test the waste oil by this method.

Yes I had a little chat with the guy who is responsible for the analysis, and from what I remember he said this is the same method and there are no differences between ASTM 4739 and ASTM 2896. 

and I was like :rolleyes:

Probably right, from your own perspective can we say ASTM D4739 is always less than the ASTM D2896 by 1 to 1.5 units. 

Is that right for the worked out oil?

In this situation can we say the correct TBN should  be around 6.96 - 6.46?

perhaps, but you still need to measure, and not guess on your fingers, in any case, the oil is working.

It works only with virgin oils. If we use the D4739 and D2896 methods for the used oil the difference may be bigger.  In your case 8 by D2896 may correspond to 7, 6 and even 5 by D4739. The oxidation of the motor oil makes the relation between TBN by different methods quite unpredictable.

As for Molybdenum. Actually, I think there should be no Mo in this Ultra I 5W-40. But in your UOA there is some, though twice lower than might be expected. Qiute strange. I don't know what to think. If you are absolutely sure that the previous oil was also Ultra I and the UOA is the same oil that your VOA - then it may be explained by the presence of Mo in Ultra I 5W-40. But why the Lab did not see Mo in the VOA and did it in UOA? The Lab is the same, isn't it?
