SAE 5W-30 (SAE 75W) Volvo Std 1273,08 which describes transmission oil 97308

Ref: 1161 645

A multigrade synthetic oil intended for manual transmissions in passenger cars.

The oil has very good low temperature properties and enables smooth gear changes down to -40°C.

The low friction contributes to low fuel consumption.

Recommended for transmissions up to and incl. model year 1995; M45, M46, M47, M90, M65 6-cyl. engine, M59 (T-yellow/red special turbo), M56, M58AWD. All model years

M5M42 GDI-engine S40/V40. The oil is developed for transmissions and has no equal on the market. The oil gives very good shifting and low-temperature characteristics.

Technical data

Quality: API GL-4

Should be Esters based oil, so high TAN, like Redline MTL for example (http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/unleashedbeast/Oil%20Analysis%20and%20Amsoil%20Pics/21e55542.jpg). I like the pack ZDDP + Bromon also. But very expensive oil only sold by Volvo... About 20€/l

Zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, 10.53 Viscosity at 100, this oil can be poured into the engine. :D

I wonder who makes it for Volvo?

Why not use in the M47 the ATF type F/G as recommended by the Volvo?

For example : Ravenol ATF Type F - http://www.ravenol.de/en/produkte/verwendung/d/Product/show/p/ravenol-atf-fluid-type-f.html

Several reasons:

- Volvo has stoped to sell ATF F/G in their shop, and sell now the 645 as a replacement. It is not a problem in Sweden were ATF F is commonly available, but for example, in France, it is hard to find.

Btw, the Ravenol oil Type F is very strange ! It is both Dexron AND ATF F ! But, dexron has friction modifier, ATF F, has NO friction modifier. So, I really don't understand how it is possible. I sent a email to Ravenol to have some explainations , but I never received any answer... So, I will NEVER use it, because, for example, if you use dexron with friction modifier in a M46 , you burn the clutch of the overdrive... And friction modifiers can cause problems with syncho.

- ATF F is not an manual gearbox oil, not GL-4. Specs are from 1970 also... It was used in 1970 by Volvo to replace motor oil in gearbox to improve shifting at low temperatures in Sweden, but modern oils perform far better now. The 645 is GL-4 and synthetic and so, it is far better to protect the gearbox...

Btw, I have an UOA of a volvo 244 gearbox from 1978 I just bought but with only 60 000km filled with factory ATF. The wear results are awfull... (Attached).

The problem of the 645, is it flows as good as ATF and shifting at low temperature is not so good.

I have so done this VOA to find a better replacement. After looking to several oils, it seems the best are BMW MTF LT-2 oils which have a similar viscosity profile (attached)

I am testing now the Ravenol MTF-2 in my M47 since 1000 km and the shifting is very good for now. I am waiting for winter to see how it will perform.

Is it possible to use MTF Volvo OEM Ref.Nr: 31280 771 (FORD-WSS-M2C-200-D2) instead of MTF Nr.: 1161 645 ?

4 litre 31280 772

This oil is fully synthetic transmission oil for manual gearboxes

with excellent shifting and synchronising properties at all

temperatures, especially at low temperatures. Being a low

friction oil, the temperature in the transmission is reduced.

Viscosity is low, which means reduced fuel consumption which

in turn means less environmental impact.

The oil is recommended for all model years of type M65

(5-speed with 6-cyl. engine), M66, MTX75 and MMT6 and of

the type M56, M58 and M59 from and including model year

1996.

Viscosity: SAE 75W

Density: 852 kg/m³

Base: Synthetic base oil

Lowest flow point -54°C

Viscosity at +40°C: 32 mm²/s

Viscosity at +100°C: 6.4 mm²/s

There is this one also

4l 1161 846

as MMT6.

Technical data

Quality: API GL-4

Ford specification

Viscosity: SAE 75W

Density: 847 kg/m3

Color: Yellow

Flash point: +215° C

Viscosity at +40°C 30.5 mm2/s

Viscosity at +100°C 6.3 mm2/s

The viscosity at 100° is a little low compared to ATF F specs:

Type F

viscosity at 100° > 7 cst and > 6.2 after 8000 cycles of WOT test

But should not be armfull in a manual gearbox. Low temp viscosity is quite similar to the ATF.

BUT, as there are sold as "low friction oil", I don't know how they will work in M41 or M46 gearbox with overdrive with its clutch, filled also with ATF F...

Problem with Volvo oils is also the price :)

Ок. Another question - can I use 1161745 instead of 1161645 ?
