I live in Moscow and drive a V40cc with the 5 cylinder B5204T8 engine.

After some driving the car started to burn oil. A lot of oil, about one liter per 1000 to 1500km.

Well after diagnosing, we concluded the oil control rings are kaput. (it is a myth that a car burning oil give blue smoke. as you can see it is white)

I had new pistons and rings installed and the oil consumption stopped.

And now the question:

At the garage they poured Volvo 5W40 oil in the car saying it would handle the heat near the oil control rings better when driving in moscow traffic.

 

What is your opinion? is 5W40 better than the recommended 0w30? And if 40 is better, would it not be more logic to use 0W40 to also handle Moscow winter?
