  1. Avista is doing what they call upcycling, which means they use used oil as crude oil to reffine new base oil:

    http://www.avista-oil.com/en/technology/processes.html

This new base oil can be hydrocracked to produce HC base.

You have the whole process in this 32 pages document: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/81581377/AVISTA-OIL-Group-AVISTA-OIL-Group-Kernsolvat-Re-raffinated

I think they use it in all mineral/HC oil they sell. On all the Pennasol oil I have tested, I have a TAN>4

Note: Motor Gold are the same oils as Pennasol with just different names

  2. ... if you follow reasonable intervals of oil change.

Exactly, but as this car is used for short trips, the main problem is fuel dilution and the associated oxydation and TBN fall down. So, even with an expensive synthetic, I am not sure you can run a lot of longer...

So du to this usage, I prefer changing oil 3 times often for the same price...

    1st column: last UOA

2nd column: average of this car UOAs

3-7 column: previous UOAs if any

8th column: average of all UOAs made by blackstone for this engine type, in this case, based on 6500 km average

  3. @miniac007, Why do you use STOU oil? Price? Or this oil is in the gearbox as well?

I have a tractor which want a 10w-30 for engine/gearbox/hydraulic, and it is also good for this Volvo (in engine, not in the gearbox). So I bought the 10w-30 by 20l can. This is the cheapest 10w-30 oil available in Sweden, and it seems to do the job quite well, also in winter, dispite the low quality base (big viscosity shut down). High level of ZDDP seems to be good for those engines.

So no need to invest in some expensive synthetic oils...

  4. Hi all, this is my new report for my old Volvo.

This Volvo 940 only run cold for 5 to 10 km trip. The biggest trip is 60 km twice a month... Red block B200F engine.

    The oil is a tractor oil, Q8 T1000D, base group I (http://www.oils.am/home/242.html)

Filter is a MAN W917 (specs attached)

My wife killed the head gasket by running 200 km with a coolant leak (3 liters of coolant were gone) , and the car did the last 1000 km as is...

Engine universal average from blackstone are based on 6500 km OCI.

  5. Very high TAN :( So, this sample will not live long...

And do you have any kind of cats (or TWC etc.) in your car?

Yes, high TAN is caused by Pennasol which is based on recycled oil... I had one can left so I used it... I will use Meguin FAMO for the next I think. But no matter for me, as my cars do not run a lot, so I often change oil every two years with 3000 km ... So no matter having an expensive syntoil for long OCI, I just want an oil which protect well, especially old engines, so a CI-4 dino is ok for me.

I have a TWC on my Volvo 940, but the manual ask for an API SG oil, and on my mitsubishi which asks for SL ... So ZDDP are not a problem ... The main problem is when an engine burns oil. In this case, you will kill your cat soon, SG or SN, no matter...

  6. Yes, I know the delvac 5w40 but did you see the price ???

    http://www.ebay.de/itm/Delvac-1-5W40-4Ltr-/400492901500?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5d3f3cb47c

    20€/l ... no comment ...

For Duron, unable to get some in Sweden...

There are good 5w30 CI-4 at a good price, but my cars (peugeot and others) need SAE 40 ... a 5w40 at a good price, I have only found Mannol but no german provider to send it to Sweden...

  7. Hi all,

This is a UOA from the Mitsubishi Space Star 1.6 16V - 2002 - I have just bought. I don't know the kind of oil there was in... There was a can of Q8 5w-40 Excel in the back, but I don't know if it the one which was used...

    Malhe air and oil filters

So, nothing usefull about the oil, but can be for the average of the wear metals for this engine as a comparaison basis for the future...

  8. Hi all,

I needed a 5w-40 oil for some of my old cars in Sweden. A 5w for the winter and a 40 when engine warm, but it is now difficult to find something else than SM or SN... And I wanted a strong add pack for my flat tappets...

    So I make my own 5w40 ...

    Here is the mix:

    - 5 liters of Pennasol Lightrun 10w40 CI-4 (any 10w-40 LKW CI-4 with Mo+B should work): http://www.motor-oel-guenstig.de/Motoroel-LKW-Traktor/10W-40/Pennasol-10W-40-Lightrun-2000-fuer-API-CI-4-SL-usw-::164.html

    164_0.jpg

    - 4 liters of Aral Hightronic 0w40 (100% PAO): http://www.levoil.de/epages/62903875.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/62903875/Products/135

    SG103653_m.JPG

    - 39ml of ZDDPlus: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ZDDPlus-Oil-Additive-for-Classic-Motorsport-Engines-/150328982689?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item23004e3ca1

    3048_12.JPG

Price 7€/l with delivery to Sweden from germany and UK.

I will test it and post the UOA later

PS: High TAN and insoluble traces come from Pennasol which contains recycled base

  9. But the pourpoint temp is not in the SAE J300, so no need a spacial one to have a 5W, and is not very precise to have an idea of the perfomance of the oil at low temperature. If you want a spec on the pourpoint temp, you have to swicth to oil with car manufacturer spec which define a minimum pourpoint, like VW or others.

I will be better to only use the BPT MRV, if you can measure it.

Or better, just fit an oil presure gauge on your engine... The real BPT will be reached when you cannot get 20 PSi after 1 min ;)

  10. In St-Petersbur, Russia for example

    Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100 5W 40 (5L) (patnumber 7501) - 1 823 RUR or 364,6 RUR for 1 liter ( ~ 8.51 EUR)

    Chevron Delo 400 LE 5w40 Synthetic CJ-4/SM ( 4 quarts or 3,785L) - 1 250 RUR, or 302 RUR for 1 liter (~7.09 EUR)

But other hand, Mobil and Shell doesn't sell his very interesting oli in Russia - oil for heavy duty diesel E7 E9 with API SN/SM licenses. :(:(

Liqui Molly, like Miller oil for example, are very expensive. They are part of a group of little blenders that try to sell expensive product because they claim to be better that other one. For this group of little blenders, I agree with you, there is no need to pay more for it... Big blenders products are OK for less.

The little blenders I like are the other ones who produce "normal" oil, at a better price that the big ones, like Meguin, or others.

I am interessed mainly in the ROI of an oil, so price/quality ratio. In germany, where I buy my oils, the little blenders are very well priced compared to big ones for the same quality. But maybe it is different in Russia, I don't know...

  11. I agree for aftermarket additives, but I don't believe that big blenders are better than little blenders...

I have never seen real facts to prove it: NO UOA with real statistical studies prove than big are better. So believing offers no warranty...

Moreover, history shows that powerful companies falls asleep on their victories, while the second is still progressing and eventually exceed them ...

The Delo 400 CI-4 is a very good oil too, but, unable to find it in Europe...

  12. Meguin and LM have equivalent offers but the oils seem different looking at the PDS. Meguin should produce a part of the LM oils, but with little different formulation (In the ones I checked, but I haven't check every oil). Meguin oils are cheaper than LM, but LM do much more advertising and marketing that you pay with the can...

MÉGUIN became a 100 percent subsidiary of LIQUI MOLY in 2006. Meguin acts a system supplier and joint venture partner on the major markets worldwide. As a production and logistics company Meguin supplied a whole range of well-known companies in the mineral oil sector, the mineral oil trade and industry. The new fuel depot has a total of ten storage tanks of the same capacity offer space for 18,000 cubic metres. This amount is equal to 18 million litres.

So Meguin is not a little company, and sells a lot of dino oil, and I never found on the net any related problem.

  13. @ Vadim_Mk: problem in your link...

Boron is a better AW additive at lower temperature. ZDDP are good at higher temp. So I prefer a combination of the 2, and I expect it in a CI-4, especially in mixed fleet oil like this one... It is less critical on HDEO engines running H24.

Anyway, I prefer to pay less for a CF-4 tractor oil with the same formulation... Better ROI...
